This oil-on-canvas painting was created in 1871 by American landscape artist Robert S. Duncanson (1821-1872). Inspired by his many visits to Italy and its history, Duncanson painted this scene showing people exploring the ruins and searching for treasure after Pompeii erupted. (Smithsonian)
