Mary Hopkinson
This oil-on-canvas painting was created in 1764 by American painter Benjamin West (1738-1820). The woman in the painting, holding a mandolin, is Mary Hopkinson. She was the wife of Dr. John Morgan, who founded the University of Pennsylvania Medical in 1765 and was the chief surgeon of the Continental Army from 1775-1777. (Smithsonian)
