This oil-on-canvas painting was created ca. 1913 by American impressionist painter Childe Hassam (1859-1935). The young woman is sitting on a rocky outcropping of the Appledore Island, the largest of the Isles of Shoals. This group of islands is located off the coast of Maine and New Hampshire.
