This oil-on-canvas painting was created in 1884 by American figure and portrait painter Frank Duveneck (1848-1919). The painting shows ordinary Venetians performing their daily chores on the Riva degli Schiavoni, a waterfront walkway in Venice. The Grand Canal is in the background. (Smithsonian)
