Episode of the Siege of Lille, 1792
This oil-on-canvas painting was created in 1821 by French artist Georges Gaston Theodore Melingue (1839-1914). The Siege of Lille took place from September 25 to October 8, 1792, during the War of the First Coalition during the French Revolutionary Wars. The wars were fought between France and various alliances that included Austria, Prussia, Russia, Spain, and Great Britain. (Smithsonian)
