This oil-on-paperboard painting was created in 1859 by American artist Andrew W. Warren (1823-1873). The idyllic landscape captures daily routines of rural life at the time. Sheep and cattle are grazing, while several people relax on the porch or bind sheaves of wheat. All of rural life is represented with a farmhouse, barn, gardens, farmland, and even a graveyard on the hill. (Smithsonian)
