This oil-on-canvas painting was created in 1875 by Swiss-American portrait, animal, and landscape painter Edward L. Custer (1837-1881). This peaceful view of a lake may have been painted in the White Mountains of New Hampshire or another New England location where Custer commonly worked. (Smithsonian)
