Mrs. Joseph Wright
This oil-on-canvas painting was created in 1792 by American landscape and portrait artist (self-taught) Ralph Earl (1751-1801). The older woman is Hannah Gilbert Wright (1718-1804), a well-known widow and businesswoman living in Middletown, Connecticut. She was painted in elegant, fashionable clothing and holds a book.
