The Speculator
This oil-on-canvas painting was created in 1852 by American genre painter Francis William Edmonds (1806-1863). The painting shows a rural couple listening to a salesman, a representative of the Building Association. His appearance, that of a sweet-talking city slicker, appears to make the couple skeptical of his promises. (Smithsonian)
