Triumph of Stoffel Brinkerhoff, on His Return from His Conquests in the East
This oil-on-wood painting was created in 1835 by American artist John Gadsby Chapman (1808-1899). It shows a rural parade in rural New York, held in honor of the fictional character Stoffel Brinkerhoff. Brinkerhoff was a fictional character in Washington Irving's humorous book, Knickerbocker's History of New York. (Smithsonian)
