Cotopaxi
This oil-on-canvas painting was created in 1855 by American landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900). Church was fascinated with descriptions he’d read of Cotopaxi, a “most dreadful volcano” in Ecuador. It is said that during his first trip to the area, he waited a whole day by this hacienda waiting for the clouds to lift enough for him to get a good look at the peak. (Smithsonian)
