Excelsior Geyser in Action
The first recorded sighting of this now dormant geyser was written up in 1869, although explorers did not know they had discovered the world’s largest geyser. At its peak between 1881 to 1890, the Excelsior threw boiling water and rocks to the height of a 30-story building and as wide as a football field. Photographed in 1888 by F. Jay Haynes, hand tinted by Stanley R. Waine.
