Howard Eaton on Horseback
Howard Eaton was one of Yellowstone National Park’s most famous concessionaires between 1883 and 1921. Eaton offered saddle-horse tours that showed hundreds of tourists the park’s many wonders. The tours were typically 15 to 20 days long, but Eaton promised “roughing it with comfort.” After Eaton died in 1922, a 157-mile bridle and hiking trail was named for him. Photographed by Elliott W. Hunter, hand tinted by Stanley R. Waine.
