Skiing Party and Obsidian Cliff
Renowned Artic explorer Lt. Frederick Schwatka leads a mid-winter expedition through Yellowstone. All are making the trek on skis beside the black, volcanic rock of the Obsidian Cliff. This volcanic glass served as a primary source for making tools by indigenous people for more than 11,000 years. Photographed in 1887 by F. Jay Haynes, hand tinted by Stanley R. Waine.
