Al-Che-Say, White Mountain Apache, was a renowned chief born in the mountains of north-central Arizona. His Apache name was Tsajn (“swollen one”). He enlisted as scout in 1872 and is described in U. S. Army records as about 20 years old, 6 feet one inch tall, with a “copper complexion” and black hair. Photographed ca. 1895 by Markey & Mytton.
