This woodblock print illustrates part of the Chushingura (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers), a famous Japanese story of the 47 rōnin (samurais without masters). It is from the series, “Ogura Imitations of One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets.” It was created ca. 1847 by Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), considered the last great master of ukiyo-e art or woodblock print.
