This woodblock print portrays a large gate that at one time was the entrance to the Shimbara pleasure quarter in Kyoto, Japan. It was created ca. 1834 by Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), considered the last great master of ukiyo-e art or woodblock print. (From the collection of the Rijks Museum, Amsterdam)
