Moonlit Scene of Harajuku Uemon Robbing a Peasant, No. 53
This woodblock print shows Harajuku Uemon, a legendary Japanese outlaw, robbing a peasant. It is part of the series “Pictures of the Tôkaidô Road,” portraying different locations along the historic route connecting Edo (Tokyo) with Kyoto. It was created ca. 1845 by Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), considered the last great master of ukiyo-e art or woodblock print. (From the collection of the Rijks Museum, Amsterdam)
