Yaoya Oshichi Looking at Her Sleeping Lover
This woodblock print shows a scene from the legend of Yaoya Oshichi, a young girl whose tragic love story was frequently used in kabuki plays and art. It is from the series, “Ogura Imitations of One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets.” It was created in 1846 by Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), considered the last great master of ukiyo-e art or woodblock print.
