Sawamura Tosshō no Shirai Gonpachi
The title translates to “Sawamura Tosshō as Shirai Gonpachi.” This woodblock print shows actor Sawamura Tosshō playing Shirai Gonpachi, a samurai turned outlaw. He is about to draw his sword. The woodcut was created (with color) ca. 1867 by Japanese ukiyo-e artist Kunichika Toyohara (1835-1900). (Library of Congress, LC-DIG-jpd-00055)
