Gaikokujin Sen no Uchi Jōkisen
The title translates to “Foreigners’ Ship: Steamship.” This woodprint shows a man and boy looking at an American steamship docked in a Japanese harbor. The ship may be that of Commodore Perry. The woodcut was created in 1861 by Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), considered the last great master of ukiyo-e art or woodblock print. (Library of Congress, LC-DIG-ppmsca-74589)
