Standing tall and central in this desert landscape is a Mexican giant cardón, also known as the elephant cactus. Its native habitat is Mexico, Baja California, coastal Sonora, and the islands in the Gulf of California. The cardón is the tallest cactus species in the world, at over 60 feet in height. A mature cardón cacti can weigh up to 25 tons and live hundreds of years.
