This snow mountain range is Mount Cook, the highest mountain in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, and found in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park. Mount Cook was given its name in 1851 to honor Captain James Cook’s circumnavigation of New Zealand. The Māori name for the mountain is Aoraki, which translates to "cloud piercer.”
