Mount Taranaki, also known as Taranaki Maunga, is a dormant stratovolcano on New Zealand's North Island. Its last major eruption occurred in 1655, but it is said that minor eruptions occur every 90 years. Because of its cultural importance to the Māori, New Zealand’s indigenous people, the mountain was officially granted personhood in 2025, giving it all the rights and responsibilities of a human being.
