Shown here are the Coyote Buttes, part of the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness located on the border of Utah and Arizona. The rock formations were formed through erosion of Jurassic-era Navajo sandstone. The swirling coloration is due to iron oxide pigments in the layers.
