Hermit crabs are social crustaceans that live in groups, have ten legs, and two claws. They carry an empty seashell on their backs to protect their soft bellies. As they grow, they have to find a bigger shell to move into and sometimes trade with other hermit crabs.
NOTE: Some images are valuable historical records. To preserve their original condition, we have presented them as captured; their resolution may not be optimal for modern displays.
