The red supergiant star at the center of this image, named V838 Monocerotis (V838 Mon), produced a dramatic light echo or pulsing display. The light from the stellar flash lit up the surrounding dust clouds. While it looked like the star’s material was pulsing outward, it was just the flash traveling fast and reflecting off particles of dust. (Hubble Space Telescope)
