The Sombrero Galaxy, also known as Messier 104 (M104), resembles nothing so much as a wide-brimmed Mexican hat—hence its name. It is surrounded by dark rings, dust lanes that emphasize its distinctive sombrero shape. Part of the Constellation of Virgo, the galaxy is approximately 28 million light-years away from Earth.
