The Lagoon Nebula, also known as Messier 8 or NGC 6523, is a huge stellar nursery and star-forming area located about 4,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Sagittarius. The huge cloud of gas and dust is about 55 light-years wide and has a 20 light-years-long tail. Its color comes from the radiation of young stars forming there.
