Marching Band on Inauguration Day
This print shows a large marching band, Haverly’s European Mastodon Minstrels (a group of blackface performers in full uniform), performing on the steps of the Capitol on Inauguration Day. The date was likely March 4, 1897, as President William McKinley was sworn in. A row of Honor Guards stands at attention on the steps on either side of the band as the crowd looks on. This color lithograph was published ca. 1897 (Call No. POS - MIN - .H39, no. 1).
