This photograph shows a group of young women in the uniform of the day, bloomers and middy shirts, playing baseball on the National Mall. Bloomers were loose-fitting pants ending just below the knee. Middies were loose shirts allowing for easy movement. These women were known at the time as “Bloomer Girls,” after the suffragist Adelaide Jenks Bloomer. The photograph was published in 1919.
