This wood engraving was created by artist Thomas Nast and printed in black and rose on wove paper. His inspiration was the emancipation of Southern slaves at the end of the Civil War. Various scenes show how Nast envisioned the old life contrasted with the new life for free Blacks in the United States. It was published ca. 1865 by S. Bott. (LC-DIG-pga-03898).
