The original painting of this scene was created by artist Samuel S. Frizzell (1844 - 1895) the year before General Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) became the 18th president of the United States. It shows Grant standing in front of the U. S. Capitol with other soldiers and horses. This color lithograph was published ca. 1868 by Chas. H. Crosby Lith. (LC-DIG-pga-00584).
