Porcupines are found in forests, grasslands, deserts, and even mountains in North and South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. These nocturnal rodents are best known for their quills, which do not shoot out as some think but drop off easily when attacked. They are good swimmers, partly due to the fact that their quills are hollow and aid in buoyancy.
