Often portrayed as tricksters, jackals are from the same family as dogs, wolves, and foxes. They are found across Africa, Europe, and Asia, living in savannas, grasslands, deserts, and bushlands. These medium-sized omnivores eat small mammals, birds, and reptiles as well as other predators’ leftovers. Their howls, yaps, and barks can be heard from a distance.
