This marine bird is widely recognized by its bright blue feet, which are a sexually selected trait used in elaborate courtship rituals. The bluer a booby’s feet are, the more attractive he is to female boobies. Half of all blue-footed boobies live on the Galapagos Islands. Their name comes from the Spanish word “bobo,” because of their clumsiness and comical appearance.
