Male Gambel’s Quail on the March
These birds are commonly found in the deserts and residential areas of the American Southwest and Mexico. These ground-dwelling birds prefer desert scrub, mesquite habitats, and other desert areas near sources of water. Gambel’s quail are highly social and live in groups called coveys. They can fly but only for short distances and close to the ground, preferring to run.
