Eastern Screech Owl in the Crook of a Tree

These small, common owls are found in woodlands across Eastern North America, although they have learned to adapt to urban and developed areas. They usually nest and roost in tree holes or other natural hollows. Despite their name, they do not screech. They make sounds like a horse whinny when threatened or social noises like barks, hoots, squeals, or high-pitched screams or whistles.
