Male California Quail on Sentry Duty
California quails, or valley quails, live on the ground and maintain a diet of seeds, leaves, berries, and insects. These highly social birds gather in flocks of 20-100 birds. These groups break up in the spring as individual males and females form pairs for the breeding season. Single males take on the role of sentry while others feed and protect their young.
