Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone National Park
This photograph shows the iconic Grand Prismatic Spring, one of the hot springs that Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming) is known for. The park sits on a giant magma plume, an area where magma melts below and rises through the crust. Yellowstone’s magma plume heats groundwater as high as 200°, creating over 10,000 geothermal features like this one.
