Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park
This photograph shows one of the hot springs that Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming) is known for. The park sits on a giant magma plume, an area where magma melts below and rises through the crust. Yellowstone’s magma plume heats groundwater (as high as 200°), creating over 10,000 geothermal features like this one. Popular colorful hot springs in Yellowstone include Emerald Pool, Rainbow Pool, and the Grand Prismatic Spring.
