The large rock formation is called Chief Kiwanda Rock or Haystack Rock, located in the Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area of Pacific City, Oregon. The rock is made of sandstone, unlike most others along the northern Oregon coast that are made of volcanic basalt. Chief Kiwanda was an early Native American leader who lived there in the early 1800s.
