This oil-on paper was mounted on canvas in 1868 by German American artist Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902). This dramatic landscape of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range, in California, was created in Bierstadt’s Rome studio a few days after he visited the area. (Smithsonian)
