This painting was created by American maritime artist Julian O. Davidson (1853-1894). The scene portrays the fierce naval battle between the USS Kearsarge and the CSS Alabama during the Civil War. The battle took place on June 19, 1864, off the coast of Cherbourg, France. The color lithograph was published ca. 1887 by L. Prang & Co. (LC-DIG-pga-04041).
