This painting shows the battle near Antietam Creek in Maryland during the Civil War on September 17, 1862. The clash between Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee and Union Gen. George McClellan marked the bloodiest single day in American military history (23,300 casualties). This color lithograph was published ca. 1888 by Kurz & Allison (LC-DIG-pga-01841).
