This painting shows the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House (Virginia), a major clash fought from May 8-21, 1865. This Union offensive was led by Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and aimed to destroy Gen. Robert E. Lee’s army and capture the Confederate capitol of Richmond. This color lithograph was published ca. 1888 by Kurz & Allison (LC-DIG-pga-01857).
