Battle of the Wilderness
This painting shows the Battle of the Wilderness, the first major engagement of Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s Overland Campaign against Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. Fought May 5-7, 1864, the skirmish was intensified by the difficult terrain. Neither side was victorious. This color lithograph was published ca. 1887 by Kurz & Allison (LC-DIG-pga-01859).
