This oil-on canvas was created in 1835 by American artist George Catlin (1796-1872). Black Hawk, a Sac chief, is dressed in a suit of buckskin with strings of wampum in his ears and on his neck. He is holding a medicine bag made from the skin of a black hawk. His fan was made from the hawk’s tail. (Smithsonian)
