This oil-on canvas was created in 1832 by American artist George Catlin (1796-1872). Catlin spent a lot of time at a Sac and Fox village in 1835 and painted many of the members while there. In Catlin’s notes, he described I-o-wáy as having a “’body curiously ornamented with his ‘war-paint.’” (Smithsonian)
