The Top of Mount Sinai with the Chapel of Elijah
This oil-on-linen painting was created in 1844 by American painter Miner Kilbourne Kellogg (1814-1899). Kellogg was fascinated by his visit to Mount Sinai, located in the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt, where Moses received the Ten Commandments according to Biblical text. The man seated on the summit next to the Chapel of Elijah is Kellogg himself. He used this painting and others in his travel lectures at home. (Smithsonian)
